SAFETY AROUND
WATER

SAFE SWIMMERS
CONFIDENT KIDS

PRESENTED BY
THE GORVETZIAN FAMILY

At the YMCA of the Foothills, we believe swimming is an essential life skill.

The Y has more than 110 years of experience teaching people to swim. We have certified, caring staff trained to handle swimmers of all abilities and all ages. Our swim lessons help adults, parents, and kids who want to learn a life skill by increasing their knowledge, ability, and stamina to build smart, strong swimmers and confident kids.

In 2021, the YMCA of the Foothills and the Gorvetzian Family partnered to further our mission by providing free swim lessons to three Glendale Unified Schools that were a part of Campalooza. These lessons taught essential water safety and drowning prevention skills that were learned by children between the ages of 5 and 12 for a total of 10 weeks. Not only did they learn pool safety, but they also learned open water safety and backyard pool safety all while having the time of their lives.

SAW STORY

Before the Safety Around Water Program swim session began, 6-year-old Mason had been uncomfortable and scared to swim in the water. Mason has attended every class always wearing a smile across his face eager to learn more and within the first two weeks from knowing absolutely nothing, he was beginning to swim on his own. Looking back on the first day of the Safety Around Water Program, Mason would sit still on the pool shelf and hold it with all his might so that he wouldn’t fall. Now after lessons, Mason is now capable of swimming on his own, comfortable with putting his head under the water, perfected blowing his bubbles, and cannot stay still on the pool shelf. He just wants to swim and he’s learned life-saving drowning prevention and water safety along the way.
