“July is a blind date with summer” – Hal Borland (American writer, journalist, and naturalist)
I think Hal had it right – you never know what you are going to get in July – and that’s part of the excitement! Sometimes you wake up to gray, chilly, and damp. Sometimes it’s 90 degrees by 9:00am. Some days are best spent lounging around indoors, hiding from the heat; while others draw you to the great outdoors, squeezing out every bit of sunlight from the day.
Our Y has a ton of good things going on this month and I wanted to highlight a few below:
Program Partnerships Highlight: In June, the YMCA of the Foothills signed two landmark service agreements with the La Cañada Unified School District and the Glendale Unified School District. The Y will provide 3-weeks of Summer School Half-Day Camp for 20+ students at La Cañada Elementary School and 6-weeks of enrichment summer camp at Dunsmore Elementary School for up to 200 kids a week.
In partnership with Brie Happy Boards (@briehappyboards on Instagram), lunches were provided to these campers at no cost to the families. Thank you to the owner/operator Angineh Meserkhani for providing such nutritional lunches! This is an example of how the Y has helped to fill the critical “summer learning loss” gaps in our communities, while working hand in hand with our local school districts.
