FAST FACTS

The Nation's first-known English as a Second Language class - today known as ESL was held at the Cincinnati YMCA in 1856 for German immigrants.



The Peace Corps, founded in 1961 by order of President Kennedy, was patterned after the YMCA's prorgam of World Service Workers, which started in the 1880's.



Mrs. Smith's Pies got their start at a YMCA in 1918. Amanda Smith sold her home-baked pies one slice at a time at the Pottstown (Pa.) YMCA lunch counter.
